One of the things I like best about my job is the time off. As of today, I’m off work for two weeks. I don’t go back until after the New Year.

Of course, I like plenty of other things about my job beyond not being there — including the projects I work on and the people I work with — but I would be lying if didn’t appreciate the generous holiday structure.

The only way I could have done any better in the holiday department is by becoming a teacher — but that involves children.

Actually, teacher was career choice number 2 for obvious reasons…..I enjoy children almost as much as I enjoy relaxing at home.

This evening was my film festival night. (Yeah, that’s right I belong to two book clubs and I also attend screenings once a month.)

The film — a documentary for the curious — was interesting but that’s not what I want to talk about. I want to talk about the flashlight people.

The older couple sitting in front of us was using flashlights to let their friends know where they were sitting.

They waved them around like batons and — get this — the friends coming into the theatre also had flashlights of their own. It was a movement!

I was getting annoyed as they were (unwittingly) flashing the beams into my eyes giving me spots.

I didn’t say anything as I didn’t want to into a fight with two aging Lefties — the festival is like an NDP convention — but their images are seared on my retinas (thanks to some super halogen bulbs) so I will be sure to avoid them next month.
